Why We Built Lhoop
From finding out we were having twins to building a marketplace that actually works for busy parents
🎯 Key Takeaways
- •Finding out we were having twin boys meant building a complete wardrobe system from scratch
- •Facebook Marketplace frustrations: flaky buyers, unsafe meetups, wasted time
- •Existing platforms (Vinted, Depop) weren't built for busy parents' needs
- •AI breakthrough: Reduce 10-minute listings to 30 seconds with photo-based descriptions
- •Lhoop: Parent-only marketplace with zero seller fees and secure payments
The twins announcement
We'll never forget that ultrasound. One heartbeat. Then two. Twin boys. Our family was about to change overnight, and so was everything we thought we knew about managing kids clothes.
We already had our daughter, and her wardrobe had been relatively straightforward. Hand-me-downs from cousins, occasional sales, and clothes that got passed along to other families when she outgrew them. It was a functioning ecosystem.
The problem: Boys vs girls clothes
But twin boys? That was different. We didn't have an existing system. We had to build an entire boys wardrobe from scratch, and it needed to be practical - no delicate fabrics, nothing too precious. Multiply everything by two. Times two for growth spurts. Times two again because babies grow at different rates.
The math was overwhelming. And we knew that within 6-12 months, all these clothes would be outgrown. The thought of buying everything new, only to donate it away shortly after, felt wasteful and expensive.
The Facebook Marketplace frustration
Like most parents, we turned to Facebook Marketplace first. It seemed like the obvious solution - free listings, large local audience, and plenty of kids clothes available.
What followed was months of frustration:
- Flaky buyers who'd arrange a meetup, confirm the time and place, then ghost completely
- Unsafe meetups in random parking lots or unfamiliar neighborhoods
- Time-wasting messages - "Is this still available?" repeated 20 times, half-hearted negotiations over $5
- No accountability - anonymous profiles, no reviews, no way to build trust
- Chaotic listings - blurry photos, vague descriptions, no size standards
We were spending hours managing these transactions, time we desperately didn't have with newborn twins at home. The irony wasn't lost on us: we were using this platform to save time and money, but it was costing us both.
Looking at existing solutions
Platform Comparison
Maybe the problem was just Facebook Marketplace. We looked at alternatives:
Vinted and Depop were slick, modern platforms - but designed for fashion enthusiasts, not overwhelmed parents. They encouraged browsing, discovery, and building a fashion identity. We just needed to move clothes quickly and safely. Plus, the seller fees ate into already slim margins on baby clothes.
US/EU platforms had great features, but shipping costs from overseas made them impractical for Australian families. We needed something local, built for our market, with realistic shipping options.
None were parent-focused. Kids clothes were mixed in with general fashion, sneakers, vintage finds. There was no verification that you were dealing with another parent. No features designed around the specific needs of family life - bulk listings, growth-rate bundling, size uncertainty.
The AI breakthrough
The final straw came when we tried listing 50+ items in one evening. Each listing required:
- Taking multiple photos
- Writing a detailed description
- Categorizing the item
- Selecting size, condition, brand
- Setting a fair price
- Checking for stains or damage
Multiply that by 50. With twins crying in the background. It was impossible.
💡 The Realization
What if AI could write the listing from just photos? A 10-minute manual process reduced to 30 seconds.
That's when we had the realization: What if AI could write the listing from just photos?
Upload 3-4 photos, and AI instantly generates:
- A clear, accurate description
- Detected brand and condition
- Suggested category and size
- Fair market price
A 10-minute manual process reduced to 30 seconds. For parents juggling hundreds of outgrown items, this wasn't just convenient - it was transformative. It meant actually being able to sell clothes instead of just donating them because listing was too exhausting.
Building Lhoop
We realized we weren't alone in this frustration. Every parent we spoke to had the same stories - ghost buyers, wasted time, unsafe meetups, clothes donated simply because selling was too hard.
So we built Lhoop around five core principles:
- Parent-only verified community- Know you're dealing with another parent, not an anonymous account or reseller
- Zero seller fees - Keep 100% of your earnings. If you price something at $20, you get $20. We only charge buyers a small service fee for protection.
- AI listing assistant - Upload photos, get instant descriptions. List 50 items in the time it used to take to list 3.
- Secure payments with buyer protection - No more cash meetups. Payments held safely until delivery confirmed. Disputes handled fairly.
- Australian-focused - Built for our market with realistic Australia Post shipping rates and local pickup options
Vision: Community Lhoops
We're just getting started. Our vision extends beyond online transactions.
We want to create local Lhoops - neighborhood communities where parents can connect locally, building trust within their suburb or school catchment. Imagine secure pickup lockers or Lhoop boxes at local cafes, childcare centers, or community hubs.
Sell Australia-wide through the app, but pick up locally when someone's around the corner. Build relationships with other local parents. Create a circular economy that actually feels personal and safe.
