Why it piles up
Kids outgrow clothes constantly, so the outgrown pile grows faster than you can deal with it. Left alone, it takes over a cupboard, then a corner, then the garage. The fix isn't a big weekend blitz; it's a simple sorting rule you can run in ten minutes whenever a size turns over.
The four piles
- Keep. Only genuine sentimental pieces, or the next size down waiting for a sibling. Be strict; "might need it" is how clutter wins.
- Sell. Good condition, decent brands, and complete. These are worth money and easy to pass on. Bundle by size to make it quick.
- Donate. Perfectly wearable but not worth the effort of selling. Straight to a charity that can use it.
- Recycle. Stained, holey or worn out. Textile recycling, not landfill, so it doesn't add to the pile.
The one rule that speeds it up
Handle each piece once. Pick it up, decide its pile, put it there, move on. No maybe pile, because a maybe pile is just tomorrow's clutter with extra steps. If you can't decide in three seconds, it goes in sell or donate.
