Tugun Skatepark sits on the open playing fields of the Betty Diamond Sports Complex on Boyd Street, hard up against the Gold Coast Airport boundary. It is really two parks that grew into one. The newer half, from a $750,000 upgrade in 2015 with a further extension by skatepark builder Convic in 2017, has smooth concrete, an eight-foot pool-style bowl finished with coping and tiles like a backyard pool, and about seventy metres of L-shaped street plaza with ledges, hubbas, rails, manual pads and quarters.

The older half is 1980s and 1990s concrete and it shows, in a good way. Two half pipes survive from back then, one four foot and one five foot, both close to vertical at the lip, alongside banks, pyramids, hips and launch boxes with nothing over six feet. Between the two halves there is a line for most abilities: the flat plaza and the low boxes suit a first-timer on a scooter or a board, and the bowl and the old half pipes are for confident riders and teens. Bikes are welcome too, with a marked BMX area.

There is no playground here, so under-fives come for the grass, the shade shelters and the planes. The planes are the other half of the outing: Gold Coast Airport names this spot in its own plane-spotting guide because aircraft pass low directly overhead. Around the concrete you get toilets with disability access, picnic shelters and barbecues, drinking water, free parking off Boyd Street, rugby league and cricket fields, and a council off-leash dog area with a fenced agility section.
